Key Stage 5

Our Sixth Form curriculum offers a range of Level 3 qualifications to ensure students are provided with a broad and balanced curriculum. The Level 3 qualifications that we offer can be chosen from two categories – A Levels and Vocational qualifications such as Applied General, Tech Levels or WJEC’s. We offer traditional A Levels such as Physics, Languages, Law and Maths, alongside ‘newer’ A Levels including Psychology and Product Design.  Students can also choose from our extensive vocational offer including courses such as Criminology and Music to name a few.

We are excited to be launching Level 2 pathways from September 2022, expanding our provision offered with courses including Hair & Beauty, Sports Education, Business Management and Health Care. These courses allow students the opportunity to work with industry experts either virtually or face to face, complete work experience. The courses are designed to develop key knowledge, understanding and skills to allow students to be ready for further study or employment. Level 2 courses will be studied for one year, this can then be followed by further Level 3 study moving on to an appropriate pathway at Temple Moor, or further education at college or employment.

Through our collaborative working partnerships with local Sixth Forms at Garforth Academy and Brigshaw High School, we are pleased to offer many different subject combinations, ensuring our curriculum is broad and balanced and offers students a range of experiences both academically and personally. We are also now able to offer A Level Computer Science through our Red Kite Learning Trust school, Harrogate Grammar, through virtual lessons and online mentor meetings. We are proud of the partnerships we have established, and the opportunities these create for both students in their learning experience, and creating wider networking opportunities.

Students have the choice of a number of pathway options to choose from. Level 3 students will standardly choose 3 option subjects for their Core offer, there is then the opportunity to add to their offer by choosing different elements from the Core Plus and Core Advanced pathways. We encourage students to seek an extra level of challenge and enhance their curriculum by taking opportunities available within the different pathways. Please read our iProspectus for more details on the opportunities available, such as Extended Project Qualification and Core Maths. Level 3 subjects are studied for two years.

All students in Years 12 and 13 are involved in Continued Professional Development (CPD) throughout their two years in Sixth Form, which offers students access to external providers, along with a wide range of the staff body who deliver sessions concepts from revision technique to employability to health and wellbeing.  We are really proud to provide our students with basic first aid, CPR and defibrillator training through this programme.  The diversity of our curriculum provides an excellent preparation for both Higher Education and employment progression.

We understand that to gain the best outcomes, learning must be extended beyond the classroom. We expect students to become increasingly independent with their studying and throughout their Sixth Form experience.  Alongside the curriculum, we are committed to raising aspirations and creating mature adults who are aware of their personal responsibilities to the community and as citizens. We work closely with employers and universities to organise workshops, attend open days and provide students with the opportunity to network and listen to people in industry. We also feel extremely passionate about giving back to the school and wider community, therefore building in voluntary opportunities through the Quality Leaders Programme, which in turn also supports students in developing their own soft skills needed for their Post 18 pathways.
